One of the biggest misconceptions about miniature painting is that you need a dedicated hobby desk before you can begin.
You don’t.
Some of my favorite hobby memories happened around an ordinary dining room table.
When my wife Jen and I first got into miniature painting, we shared a large harvest table in our dining room. We’d sit across from each other with a laptop nearby streaming a favorite show while we painted for hours. Each of us had our own little workspace, with a neutral zone in the middle for shared brushes, tools, paints, and whatever project we happened to be working on that night.
Looking back, it wasn’t the furniture that made those evenings special.
It was simply having a comfortable place where we wanted to spend time together.
As life changed, so did my workspace.
When we adopted our Australian Shepherd puppies, they spent much of their early months in what we affectionately called “the dog room.” I wanted to be with them while they played, so I bought a simple 30″ × 60″ folding table and moved my hobby supplies into that room. It wasn’t glamorous, but it gave me enough room to paint while keeping an eye on the dogs.
Years later, I still use that same folding table.
Today it sits beside my computer desk, creating an L-shaped workspace in my office. If I’m writing for Mythic Minis, I simply swivel one direction. When it’s time to paint, I spin the other way and everything I need is already waiting for me.
That little folding table has followed me through several stages of life, and I’ve never really felt limited by it.
What Actually Matters in a Painting Desk?
After years of painting, I’ve realized the desk itself is far less important than a few practical qualities.
Enough Space to Work
You don’t need an enormous hobby bench, but you should have enough room for your miniature, paints, water, paper towels, brushes, and a few tools without feeling cramped.
One of the biggest productivity killers is constantly moving supplies around just to make room for the next step.
Stability
Miniature painting rewards precision.
A desk that wobbles every time you rest your forearms on it quickly becomes frustrating, especially when you’re trying to paint tiny details.
Comfortable Height
You’ll spend a surprising amount of time sitting at your painting station.
Whether it’s a dining table, computer desk, or folding table, the height should allow you to rest your forearms comfortably without hunching your shoulders. Your neck and shoulders will thank you for not straining!
Easy to Clean
Acrylic paint has an incredible ability to end up where you never intended.
Choosing a surface that’s easy to wipe down – or protecting it with a cutting mat – makes cleanup much less stressful. I use an 18×24 cutting mat just to delineate my painting space a little bit. I do get paint on it sometimes, and dried acrylic paint can be easily cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a little elbow grease.
Room to Grow
One of the wonderful things about this hobby is that your workspace naturally evolves.
You might start with a brush, a few paints, and a water cup.
Eventually you add a wet palette.
Then better lighting.
Maybe a paint rack.
Perhaps a magnifier.
Your desk doesn’t need to be perfect today – it just needs enough room to grow with you.

After all these years, I’ve realized my favorite hobby desk wasn’t my dining room table or the folding table I still use today.
It was whichever one made me want to sit down and paint.
Your painting space doesn’t need to be expensive, custom-built, or Instagram-worthy. It needs to be comfortable enough that you’ll come back tomorrow and paint one more miniature.
That’s the real purpose of a hobby desk – not to impress anyone, but to remove friction between you and the hobby you enjoy, and let the plastic glue and paint flow!
