GettAlmost every miniature painter remembers standing in front of a wall of paint wondering where to begin.

There are hundreds of individual colors available today, dozens of manufacturers, and countless opinions online about which brand is “best.” It’s enough to convince some people they’re already making the wrong decision before they’ve even painted their first model.

Fortunately, choosing your first paint set doesn’t have to be complicated.

A good starter set isn’t about owning every color. It’s about having enough paints to learn the fundamentals, experiment with different techniques, and discover what kind of painter you want to become. As your experience grows, your collection will naturally grow with it.

These are the paint sets I’d recommend to someone just getting started.

What Makes a Good Beginner Paint Set?

Rather than chasing the largest collection of paints, I think beginners should look for a few qualities.

A good starter set should provide enough colors to paint a variety of miniatures without becoming overwhelming. It should include paints that apply smoothly, cover well, and encourage good painting habits instead of fighting against them. Besides, it’s amazing what adding a little black or white does to a simple color’s shade and hue.

I’m also a huge believer in buying paints that can grow with you. Every brand featured below has an extensive range, so adding colors later is easy without replacing everything you’ve already learned.

  • ✔ CUSTOMER SATISFACTION – We Are Confident That You Will Love Our Warpaints Fanatic Starter Paint Set. If You Encounter Any Issues, Our Dedicated Team Is Always Ready to Provide Prompt and Friendly Assistance to Ensure Your Complete Satisfaction.

If I were recommending one paint set to someone completely new to miniature painting, this would probably be it.

The Fanatic Starter Set feels like it was designed by people who understand what beginners actually need. Instead of giving you a hundred colors you’ll barely use, it focuses on a practical collection of paints that covers most early projects while including several extras that many starter sets leave out.

You receive quality acrylic paints, metallics, a wash, a brush-on primer, a starter brush, and even a free miniature to practice on. That means you can begin painting almost immediately without hunting for additional supplies.

One feature I especially appreciate is Army Painter’s color triad system. As your collection expands, many colors are organized into coordinated shadow, midtone, and highlight combinations. That makes selecting additional paints remarkably intuitive and helps beginners start thinking about light and shadow instead of simply collecting more bottles.

For many painters, this is a starter set that naturally becomes the foundation of an entire collection.

Vallejo Game Color Starter Set

Vallejo – Game Color Introduction Set | Starter Set for Fantasy and Wargame Figures | 16 Bottles x 18 ml (0.60 fl.oz.) Original Packaging
  • IDEAL STARTER SET: Perfect for beginners and experienced hobbyists who want a complete Game Color introduction kit for fantasy miniatures and wargames
  • 16 VIBRANT COLORS: Includes 16 bottles of 0.6 fl. oz ,18 ml, with eyedropper caps and a balanced palette with 4 metallic paints for versatile miniature painting
  • SMOOTH BRUSH APPLICATION: Formulated for easy blending, matt finish, and excellent self-leveling to reduce brush marks on detailed models. It can be used with an airbrush if properly diluted with Airbrush Thinner
  • HIGH PIGMENT FORMULA: Delivers rich opacity, smooth coverage, and strong resistance to handling and rubbing for durable results
  • TRUSTED VALLEJO QUALITY: Designed for hobby painters looking for reliable performance, consistent color, and professional results

Vallejo has earned an outstanding reputation among miniature painters, and it’s easy to understand why.

The paints have excellent coverage, flow beautifully from their dropper bottles, and are equally comfortable for traditional brush painting or airbrushing later on.

One thing I particularly like about the Game Color starter set is what it doesn’t include.

There aren’t several washes encouraging you to solve every problem with “liquid talent.” Instead, Vallejo’s BSL (Base, Shadow, Light) philosophy encourages painters to build shadows and highlights intentionally using neighboring colors. It’s a slower approach initially, but I genuinely believe it teaches stronger painting fundamentals.

This set doesn’t include brushes or primer, so it asks a little more from the buyer than Army Painter’s complete package. For someone who already has basic supplies – or wants a slightly more serious introduction – it’s an outstanding choice.

Games Workshop Paints & Tools Set

Games Workshop – Warhammer 40,000: Paints + Tools Set
  • Games Workshop – Warhammer 40,000: Paints + Tools Set (2023 Edition)
  • Assemble, prepare, and paint your miniatures
  • Base paints – Abaddon Black, Corax White, Wraithbone, Naggaroth Night, Macragge, Leadbelcher, Balthasar Gold, Bugman’s Glow, Mephiston Red
  • Other paints – Thunderhawk Blue (Layer), Magos Purple (Contrast), Agrax Earthshade (Shade), Armageddon Dust (Technical)
  • This box also includes the following tools: Citadel Starter Brush , Citadel Starter Clippers, Citadel Mouldline Scraper

If your goal is specifically to paint Warhammer miniatures, Games Workshop has done an excellent job creating an all-in-one introduction.

The Paints & Tools Set combines essential Citadel paints with clippers, a starter brush, and hobby tools required to assemble plastic miniatures before you even begin painting.

It’s one of the easiest ways to move directly from opening a Warhammer box to putting paint on your first Space Marine or Stormcast Eternal.

The main drawback is that Citadel uses flip-top paint pots rather than dropper bottles. While many painters love the paint itself—and I certainly still use plenty of Citadel colors—I find dropper bottles easier to preserve over the long term.

Even so, for someone committed to Warhammer, this remains an excellent entry point.

  • Quality Comes in Many Colors – Made in the USA, Non-Toxic and Conforms to ASTM D-4236. Available in a range of colors, so you can find the perfect shade to suit your needs.

If you’re the type of person who prefers buying once instead of upgrading later, Pro Acryl deserves serious consideration.

These paints have become incredibly popular over the last several years thanks to their exceptional pigmentation, smooth consistency, and excellent dropper bottles.

The starter collection provides a generous selection of colors that perform beautifully for layering, glazing, wet blending, and virtually every other acrylic painting technique.

It’s certainly more of an investment than the other options here, but it’s also a collection that many experienced painters continue using for years without feeling the need to replace it.

    Which One Would I Buy?

If someone asked me today, I’d probably recommend them in this order.

    • The Army Painter Fanatic Starter Set — the best all-around package for absolute beginners.
    • Vallejo Game Color Starter Set — fantastic for painters who already own a few supplies and want exceptional paint quality.
    • Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl — perfect for someone who wants premium paints from day one.
    • Games Workshop Paints & Tools Set — ideal if you’re jumping directly into Warhammer.

Truthfully, none of these are bad choices. The best starter set is the one that gets paint onto your first miniature.

Build Your Skills, Not Just Your Collection

A quality paint set is only the beginning.

As you gain experience, you’ll naturally discover new techniques, favorite color combinations, and the tools that make painting more enjoyable. Your paint collection will grow over time, but your skills will grow much faster if you focus on finishing miniatures rather than collecting supplies.

That’s why I always encourage beginners to paint often, experiment freely, and not worry too much about making mistakes. Every finished miniature teaches something the next one can build upon.
