Easy Miniature Painting Projects for Total Beginners

Starting your first miniature painting project can feel surprisingly intimidating.

You spend weeks watching YouTube tutorials, reading painting guides, and comparing supplies before finally deciding to buy your first box of miniatures. Then the moment arrives. You clip the first model from the sprue, assemble it carefully, and suddenly realize something unexpected.

You only have one chance.

Every brushstroke feels permanent. Every mistake feels expensive. Instead of experimenting, many new painters become overly cautious because they don’t want to ruin the only miniature they have.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I encourage beginners to choose projects that include several miniatures rather than a single display model. A small group of figures gives you room to experiment. One miniature might wear blue armor while another wears green. You can try different skin tones, different basing materials, or a completely different painting technique without feeling like you’ve ruined your only opportunity.

Your first project shouldn’t be about perfection.

It should be about learning.

Before choosing your first project, it’s also worth spending a few minutes putting together a comfortable workspace. You don’t need a dedicated hobby room—just a simple setup that makes it easy to sit down and enjoy painting. One of the easiest ways to begin painting is with a complete starter set that includes everything needed to get paint onto a miniature.

Games Workshop has spent years refining their introductory boxes, and the current editions are some of the most beginner-friendly they’ve produced.

The Age of Sigmar Introductory Set introduces fantasy miniatures with straightforward assembly while providing enough variety to experiment with armor, cloth, weapons, and monsters.

Meanwhile, the Warhammer 40,000 Introductory Set offers a similar experience for science fiction fans, introducing Space Marines and Tyranids through approachable projects that gradually build confidence.

Neither box expects you to become a master painter overnight. Instead, they provide enough models to practice techniques while still feeling like you’re making progress toward a complete force.

Many beginners immediately gravitate toward human characters because they’re recognizable.

Ironically, monsters are often much more forgiving.

Painting several teaches consistency.

Once you’ve finished your first few projects, a small squad becomes the natural next step. You’ll begin discovering efficient workflows, learning to batch paint similar colors, and recognizing which techniques save time without sacrificing quality.

If you’re painting several miniatures together, having your paints and brushes arranged within easy reach becomes surprisingly important. A simple painting workflow station can make batch painting feel much smoother and more enjoyable.

For Star Wars fans, the Star Wars: Legion Core Sets provide an outstanding introduction because every faction includes multiple infantry models alongside iconic characters.

Whether you’re drawn toward the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, or the Separatist Alliance, each force offers plenty of opportunities to develop confidence while creating a playable collection at the same time.

Fantasy Miniatures Made for Practice

Not every beginner wants to commit to a large tabletop game immediately.

Sometimes it’s simply fun to paint a variety of fantasy characters.

Why I Recommend Multi-Miniature Projects

If you’ve noticed a pattern throughout these recommendations, it’s intentional.

Nearly every project I’ve suggested includes several miniatures. That’s because improvement comes from repetition. The first miniature teaches you how the paints behave. The second teaches you what you’d do differently. By the fifth or sixth miniature, you’re already seeing measurable improvement.

Many painters spend too much time worrying about ruining a single model. A collection of miniatures quietly removes that fear and replaces it with curiosity. Instead of asking, “What if I make a mistake?” you begin asking, “What happens if I try this instead?”

That shift in mindset is where real learning begins.

What matters is that you kept going.
